Why is Smoking Food a Good Idea?

Turkey Bacon

Take a look at the range of chilled meats on offer in the Najma store and you’ll notice our Halal Sliced Smoked Turkey Rashers.

As well as using turkey instead or pork for the bacon, thus ensuring the meats are halal, we smoke them for a number of reasons.

Why, you ask? Here are just a few reasons why smoking meats is often a great idea.

Reason #1 – The Taste

Smoked meats have an entirely different taste than regular meats. They are, for want of a better word, smokier.

Now, this can be an acquired taste. But anybody who enjoys barbecued meats will tend to enjoy smoked foods. As well as getting all of the benefits of grilling, such as lower fat content, you get a smoky taste that’s great when mixed with BBQ sauce and similar foods.

As a side note, smoking also changes the appearance of the meat. The smoke in the meat lends it a pinker look, which appeals to many people.

Reason #2 – It’s Tenderises the Meat

We all know that tender meat is more desirable than tough meat.

Anybody who’s had to hack away at a super tough steak before will tell you that. Untendered meat is tough to cut and a nightmare to chew. At its worst, it may feel like the meat is about to shatter your teeth.

You shouldn’t have to plan for a trip to the dentist whenever you eat a meat dish.

The great thing about smoking meat is that the process breaks down the collagen that’s in the meat. It’s this collagen that lends the meat its toughness.

As a result, you get a tastier and tenderer meat that feels like it practically melts in your mouth.

Reason #3 – It Kills Bacteria

There are all sorts of bacteria that like to find their way onto food. Some of these bacteria, such as salmonella and E.coli, can cause food poisoning that can veer into the serious territory if you’re not careful.

One of the main benefits of smoking meats is that the process destroys a lot of the bacteria that are harmful to the human body.

Now, this isn’t a perfect technique. You shouldn’t avoid taking care of your meats before cooking just because you’re intending to smoke them or they’ve already been smoked. However, it’s good to know that the technique helps to eradicate some bacteria. Moreover, it can prevent the growth of certain strains, even if it doesn’t kill them outright.

Reason #4 – Meat Preservation

All of our chilled meats are made with preservation in mind. We want you to be able to store your meats for as long as possible, especially if you don’t intend on eating them right away.

Smoking helps with that. The fact that the process slows down bacterial growth means that smoked meats tend to last longer than their unsmoked counterparts.

The Final Word

The great taste and a range of hygiene benefits make smoking ideal for many types of meat.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out our Halal Sliced Smoked Turkey Rashers for yourself. We’re sure you’ll fall in love with the smoky flavours just like we did.
